This was a 259 (4.31min) second exposure of the Atlas V rocket, which launched a Missile-Warning Satellite into space for the US Air Force. After a one day delay due to a ground-based issue associated with the rocket's liquid-oxygen system the rocket finally left earth at 7:48 p.m EDT. 42 minutes after launch the satellite had reached its inital orbit stage. The satellite itself cost $1.2 Billion. I was so panicked about this shot. Being my first rocket long exposure I had one attempt at this, and that was it. The breaks in the rocket trail are from the smoke behind it. When the sound finally reached us, the roar from the rockets, although 5miles (8km) away shook the earth and bleachers behind me and left a deep vibration shooting strait to your bones. Was truly a chilling experience. Will never forget this. I've had a few issues with the way Instagram deals with the purple in this image but this is as good as I could get it.
