Professor Cinnamon here with a quick lesson on “Proletarier aller Länder vereinigt Euch!”...these 5 words (which translate to “Workers of the world, unite!”) make up the rallying cry which appears at the end of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto, published 170 years ago today. The Manifesto stated that most problems throughout history were caused by the rich exploiting the poor - which seemed especially true at a time when 40-hour workweeks were non-existent, and even children slaved away in factories. While published in 1848, a year when revolutions were sweeping across Europe, The Communist Manifesto surprisingly had little impact in fueling those uprisings; in fact, it wasn’t widely read until decades later. Even though it came out to little fanfare, The Communist Manifesto would become one of the most important documents in history...just 100 years after its publication, roughly half of the world’s population lived under governments influenced by Karl Marx. Hope you found this interesting!
