Today I rediscovered the significance of simplicity. After a morning of net fishing with a young fisherman, I toured the property of @isletaelespino with co-owner Andrew. We had a lengthy discussion about living off the fruits of the land and how much this island has transformed.
Prior to last year, the island’s caretaker lived onsite—he was 102 years old when he decided to retire. Today, he lives a few islets over, still rowing to and from the mainland. When I asked what errands may draw the locals to shore, Andrew told me what we consider as basics like sugar and flour, but these are few and far between with subsistence farming providing locals with lots of mango and fresh fish.
We continued our conversation over two mangos we collected on our walk—freshly diced with a spritz of lime, sprinkle of salt and side of chili. That to me was an ideal simplicity, with the day finishing as it does for the locals—lots of mango and lots of fish🐟
